Pop music is the type of music which has evolved in the 1950's in Turkey as the western music styles have infiltrated the prevalent music styles, which until then mostly meant Classical Turkish Music, or Turkish Folk Music. The earliest influences have been more direct, mostly with western pop style songs being sung with Turkish lyrics.
However, Turkish Pop has evolved rather quickly from imitation to combining existing Eastern sounds with Western elements. While arabesque elements are always pushing into Turkish pop, the latter has been able to maintain its distinct sounds and rhythms, and the mainstream pop is easily distinguished from any other style.
